A Taste of Japan: Students Explore Authentic Japanese Cuisine

Students were treated last week to an unforgettable culinary experience as Chef John, a Japanese-raised, Minnesota-born, professionally trained sushi chef, visited our district to share his expertise and love for authentic Japanese cuisine.

During lunchtime, students enjoyed a traditional chicken and noodle dish, Yakisoba, expertly prepared by Chef John and our school cafeteria staff. They also had the opportunity to practice their skills using hashi (chopsticks), creating an interactive and fun dining experience.

In the morning, our advanced culinary students joined Chef John for a hands-on lesson, learning how to make Japanese dumplings. Chef John shared the history and importance of Japanese American culture and discussed the significance of authentic Japanese food, emphasizing the values instilled in him by his grandmother Tsui—to promote the true spirit of Japanese cuisine, educate proper techniques, and share the integrity of Japanese food.

Chef John’s visit was truly a sensory wonderland, offering students a deeper appreciation of Japanese cuisine and the cultural stories behind the food. We are incredibly grateful for his time and expertise, and we look forward to future collaborations.

Thank you, Chef John, for bringing the flavors and traditions of Japan to life for our students!
